Second Baptist Church is committed to the growth and development of America’s youth. We believe education, spiritual growth and community service are the keys to success in today’s society. We have developed this scholarship program to assist individuals who have recently graduated and/or currently enrolled in college, in their pursuit of higher education.

We provide scholarship awards to Second Baptist Church members who have at least a 2.50 cumulative grade point average. Students should also be actively involved in leadership roles in their school, church, or community.

Applications for scholarships must be postmarked no later than Wednesday, August 31, 2011. Notification of awards will be made by September 2011. The minimum award amount will be $500 for the Second Baptist Church Scholarship and $1000 for the W.C. and Violene Webb Scholarship.

These Scholarship programs are for undergraduate students only.

Incomplete applications and facsimiles will not be considered. It would be advised that applicant make a copy for their records.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Applicants must be members of Second Baptist Church or persons. All applicants

must have completed all of the new member requirements.

Applicants must have at least a 2.50 Cumulative Grade Point Average to qualify for a

scholarship award. Applicants are required to submit an official college transcript

in a sealed envelope.

Applicants are required to submit a typed essay (double-spaced, 12 point Times New

Roman font, 2 page maximum, one inch margin on all sides addressing the following:

Applicants are required to submit two recommendations.
Please have your references write a letter of recommendation for you. These letters should be addressed to Second Baptist Church and include:

Name and address of reference, relationship to applicant, how long reference has known applicant, and information regarding why applicant should receive the scholarship award

Each letter of recommendation should be placed in a sealed envelope and returned to the applicant to be included as part of the applicant package.

A Brief History of the William C. Webb and Violene Webb Scholarship: After serving as pastor of Second Baptist Church for 44 years, Rev. William C. Webb and Violene Webb proposed to help fund a scholarship in their names upon the completion of their duties as pastor and first lady. They would donate the first $1000 and other funding would come from church offerings, fundraisings, donations and etc. In light of this tremendous proposal, Rev. William C. Webb and Violene Webb plans to continue outreach work in the Reno-Sparks community.

A Brief History of Second Baptist Church Scholarship: Second Baptist Church was first organized in 1946, moved to its existing location in 1967, and its current building opened in 1993.

Historically, Second Baptist has done outreach programs in the community and is blessed by serving the youth, who are active members of the church with an annual church scholarship. Students graduating from elementary, middle, high school and higher educational institutions are recognized by a spiritual observance that celebrates their achievement, accomplishment and aspiration. The committee members prepare the program and administer the scholarship application process. In reiteration, we have developed these scholarship programs to assist individuals who are in their pursuit of higher education.

Criteria for the W.C. Webb and Violene Webb Scholarship:

1. A completed Second Baptist Church Scholarship Application

2. A completed 500 word essay (Topic below)

3. A copy of an official transcript (GPA 2.5-4.0)

4. Active Membership (regular worship, Sunday School and ministry involvement)

5. Good Character Reference from a teacher, school administrator and community leader

6. Parent/Guardian support of Second Baptist Church (worship attendance, giving and ministry/community involvement)

7. Personal interview with the Scholarship Committee

Criteria for the Second Baptist Church Scholarship:

2. A completed 250 word essay (Topic below)

3. A copy of an official transcript (2.0 and above)

4. Active Membership (regular worship, Sunday School and ministry involvement)

In John 17:16-18, Christ prays that we “be in the world but not of the world”. How will you prepare yourself personally and spiritually to live out these words as you

further your education and pursue your career?

The essay is an important part of the selection process. In reviewing the essays, the judges will consider the following criteria in selecting winners:

- correct use of grammar and punctuation

- creativity and originality in answering question

- quality of ideas presented

- relevancy of response to essay question/topic (answer essay question appropriately)

- overall appearance of the essay
