The Second Baptist church was organized on June 17, 1946, with Rev. David B. Meadows officiating and Rev. Charles L. Dotson as secretary. Some of the chartered members were: Sis. Clara Love, Bro. Jimmy Love, Sis. Annie Mae Saddler, Sis. Lucille Nelson, Bro. L. King, Bro. C. Spikes, Bro. Hayward Carr and Sis. Francis Carr. Rev. Sam Bell was the first Pastor when worship services were held at 765 North Street. Due to failing health, Rev. Bell resigned in 1947. Rev. Slaughter was called in 1948, and under his leadership, property was purchased at 418 Toano Street, where worship services were held until a more suitable site was found on East 8th Street. Rev. Booker T. Mayfield was later called as Pastor in 1948 and resigned in1956. At which time Rev. D. Faulkner carried on the worship services until Rev. Jesse E. Davis was called to serve until he resigned in 1963. After his resignation, Rev. Walter Johnson was called as the next Pastor and served until his death in 1964. Under his leadership the down payment was made on a parsonage at 665 Southworth Drive, Reno, Nevada. After his death, Rev. Carl Turner took charge until March of 1964 when our emeritus Pastor; Rev. William C. Webb, was called. After the Highway Department purchased the East 8th Street property, worship services were held, under Rev. William C. Webb=s leadership, at 720 Montello Street until we moved to our present location at 1265 Montello Street in 1967. In the early sixties Dr. Jesse Hall became and continues to be the Director of Music. A decade or more ago, under the leadership of Rev. William C. Webb, the Second Baptist Church decided it needed more classrooms and a Fellowship Hall in order to be more effective in our Christian teaching and outreach programs. Stepping out on faith, the building process began. When the construction of the church began on July 1, 1992, the Washoe County School District allowed our church to conduct its regular Sunday services at Glenn Duncan Elementary School, until the church was completed. Rev. William C. Webb delivered the first message in the new sanctuary on April 4, 1993. The church was dedicated on May 2, 1993, at 3:00 p.m. Dr. Earnest Myers, Executive Secretary of the Nevada Baptist Convention, delivered the dedication sermon. With the steady growth in membership, which consists of approximately 360 members, the Church was able to pay-off the property=s mortgage early in 1998, thus resulting in substantial savings. Second Baptist Church has heard hard-hitting and soul saving, biblical preaching and teaching from Rev. William C. Webb for over forty years. Following in the footsteps of the Church founders, this long-tenured Pastor earned a reputation in the community for working hard and doing God=s will to benefit all people. As an added encouragement for the youth of this church during the 1980=s, Rev. Webb was instrumental in developing the Second Baptist Church Scholarship program. Through a private donor, the Richard Radin scholarship was administered under his guidance and Second Baptist Church in 2000. The scholarship was made available to the church members and also the community. The outdoor reader board was installed in December 1998, thanks to Sis. Allene Davis. Under the dynamic leadership of Rev. William C. Webb; Rev. Clifford Cheathon, Sr., Rev. Chester Richardson III, Rev. Michael Morgan, Rev. Anthony Williams, Rev. Mark Artis and Rev. Clarence Brooks, Jr. became licensed ministers. Through these dedicated individuals: Sis. Ada Taylor, Dr. Rupert Seals, and Sis. Pat Faldeger; they encouraged the City of Reno to dedicate the William C.Webb Circle on October 25, 2004, which is located at Wedekind and Clear Acre Street in Northeast Reno. Additionally, on September 18, 2005, the Rev. William C. and Violene C. Webb Library was dedicated, with the dedication message delivered by Sis. Ada Taylor. Four years later, the Violene C. Webb Legacy Award was established March 30, 2008. This award is to be given annually to a member of Second Baptist Church for his or her faithfulness in the Lord=s work. After forty-two years of service, Rev. William C. Webb retired as Pastor of the Second Baptist Church on September 31, 2006. A Pastoral Search Committee was organized September 11, 2006. The committee consisted of the Chairman of each ministry and one at large member. Dea. Kenneth L. Matthews II, served as Chairman of the pastoral search committee, Dea. Leroy Moses, Co-Chairman; and Rev. William C. Webb, Ex- Official. Rev. Webb continued to serve as interim Pastor until July 31, 2008. The first annual Rev. William C.Webb=s Day was held on March 25, 2007, Sis. Jacquelyn Brown, Chairman. Rev. William C. Webb, and Sis. Violene Webb became Emeritus Pastor and First Lady of Second Baptist Church as of August 1, 2008. Rev. Michael L. Randle accepted the call to serve as Pastor of the Second Baptist Church on May 18, 2008. Pastor Randle preached his first dynamic sermon as Pastor of Second Baptist Church on August 3, 2008. We are thankful to the many faithful servants of Second Baptist Church for their stead fastness and faithfulness through the long search process for a pastor.
